I'm an older lady working with >established< beds. This tool is fantastic. What a back saver! The area where you step down is large enough for me to feel comfortable giving it a good hard push, it's very sturdy and leaning back you can leverage your body weight to lift the soil. It's also handy to steady me if I have to lean over and extract a weed, very safe to lean on, again very sturdy. I'm super happy with the purchase.
So disappointed in this item for the price I paid. Tines are very short, much shorter than the turning fork I currently use. It's sturdy, but again, no studier than the turning fork I currently use that cost less than $40 and has 12 inch tines. This will be returned.
The broad fork is good and very convenient to use.
I have back issues, and I refuse to stop gardening! This tool saved my back when weeding - I use it to loosen the soil, then turn the tines in the turned up dirt to aerate my soil. I love this tool. It definitely was a bigger expense than i originally wanted to pay - but the design really appealed to me since it looked sturdy (which it is), and looked like it was easier to use (which it is). Glad I went ahead and invested, it will hold up to me using it at least 4x week during gardening season!
I had no problem using this on clay soil that had been under a layer of rock and breathable weed barrier. I am not an athlete either, 53 yo woman who does not go to the gym.
